Pearl Harbor Naval Base & Hickam AFB

September 2014

Another wonderful day trip to Pearl Harbor.  If you're looking for the more typical photos, please see my previous Pearl Harbor link from 2012 or the link to my photo site above.  Colonel Chris Grazzini (Izzy Lunken, MoMM1) was our tour guide for the day... and what a guide he was!  We spent the bulk of our time between Pearl Harbor Naval Base and Hickam Air Force Base, where Chris is stationed.  See photo highlights.

On the Naval Base, we saw the original WWII Submarine Memorial with plaques for the 52 lost subs.  See the USS Snook Marker photo with all the names listed.  We did a drive-by of the USS Missouri and stopped at the USS Utah Memorial.  Touring Hickam was very interesting, including getting run over by a C17 Cargo Plane!  Well, we drove under the runway/taxiway as it rolled above us.  Pretty neat, since Chris was talking about that, just beforehand.  We saw his office building, a former barracks, which still has bullet holes from the 1941 attack.  The courtyard has a touching memorial to our war heroes and inside the building is Old Glory - the flag that flew over Hickam in 1941.

Thanks from both of us, Chris, for the great tour and for your service!  Thanks, also, to Wendi and the kids for letting us have you for the day.
