R.L. "Raymond" Hughes - Y2

Patrols 8 - 9

"My uncle was also lost at sea aboard the USS Snook, his name was Raymond Lloyd Hughes from Bakersfield, California.  I have read the book Final Dive and enjoyed it much.  My father told me many stories about his brother Ray.  His wife is still alive, living in South Gate, Ca.  My sister, Glenna Rae, is named for Uncle Ray and Aunt Glenna.

I sure enjoy your web site and the info on the USS Snook and your Uncle Vic.  I hope in our lifetime they find the USS Snook.  I looked at the crew pictures and couldn't identify my Uncle Ray, I will have Ray's living brothers and sisters look at it to see if they can identify him.  Thank you."

Obituary excerpt: "He was a feisty lad in his early days and would fight anyone at the drop of a hat, big or small.  To illustrate: one time in High School he left his school binder on a bench in Wood Shop, as he usually did, and one of his classmates nailed it to the bench.  As usual, he scooped it up as he left class. Needless to say, he tore it in two.  The class all laughed.  He laughed too and asked who had done it.  The guilty party confessed whereupon Ray politely decked him... He was a member of the High School Boxing Team.  Maybe that's why he was so anxious to get in the Navy and the Submarine Service."
