K.M. "Kenneth" Erdner - F2

Patrols 6 - 7

"I came across your web page and was excited to read about the Snook of WWII.  My father was assigned to that sub and has a lot of stories about her.  By some twist of fate he was let off at port for a ruptured ear drum, when the sub was sunk.  He is 86 years old and still has trouble talking about his comrades passing.  He said you really got to be close with the guys when you were serving.  I feel blessed that he got out alive.

He exited the sub in Siapan.  His rank when he came in the navy was Fireman and he came out as Motor Machinest Mate.  His best friends, on the sub, were Richard Billingsley and Richard Schoen.  Pop originally got on the Snook in San Francisco, then traveled to Pearl Harbor, and then to Midway for patrol.  They spent alot of time in Kolby where he said they faced daily depth charges and air bombs.  He said it was 'quite tense'.  He remembers a lot of the guys being sea sick when the sub was up on top of the water and they couldn't wait for her to go back under, where he said it was smooth sailing.  They used to tease each other with greasy pork chops.  I guess to make each other sick... oh, boys!"
